Union Cemetery, Bolivar, Hardeman, TN, USA

Notes: The term "Union" refers to a cooperative agreement between the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows and the Masonic Order to create a burial ground used by both organizations. The Union Cemetery was established in 1857 on 2 acres of land that was sold to the local chapters of the Odd Fellows and Masons and became the city burial ground in 1860.

Hundreds were buried in this cemetery in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries including the famed Philadelphia architect Fletcher Sloan who designed a number of homes and buildings in Bolivar and elsewhere.

Six unknown Confederate soldiers are buried here (may have been causalities of the nearby Battle of Davis Bridge in October 1862). A fountain was placed in Union Cemetery by the Daughters of the Confederacy as a memorial to these soldiers.

This cemetery is the largest of the city's three cemeteries and has a large number of finely crafted obelisks and other markers and headstones. Of particular note are the many Woodmen of the World headstones and markers which feature tree branches or tree trunks in their design.
